Artist Attraction #8 | Emilie De Griottes

Pantone 1797 C

It's been a while since I posted about an artist or a cool piece of art that I liked so I after rediscovering Emilie De Griottes' Pantone tarts I just had to share them! I think pantone colours are pretty well known about the internet now but if I'm wrong for you non designery people they're simply paint charts. Have a look here. There's so many of these floating around the internet but I'm pretty sure Emilie was the first. Created for the magazine food Fricote as a special feature, Emilie made little tarts that resembled specific pantone colour swatches. Bananas made pantone 7507 C, cucumber made 7492 C, and cherry tomatoes made the perfect 485 C colour. Check out all these other pretty colours made by food!

I'm not sure about eating the carrot tart but that berry one just makes my mouth water every time I look at it oh and think about it too. Not only is she a pretty amazing food designer but Emilie also blogs about it all, you can see some of her creations like her moon cake up on Griottes.fr, you will have to translate it from French but I'm sure with all the techiness of Google translate you can do that at the click of a button. She also has a very lovely designed foodie book full of great recipes, although if you want the pantone tart recipe you'll have to dig around for issue number six of Fricote which I'm pretty sure is in french.

Artist Attraction #7 | Jasmine Dowling

I've mentioned her before in previous posts like this one here but I thought this talent deserved her own post. Australian graphic designer Jasmine Dowling is one of my favourite artists, I'm in love with her lettering. Just look at it all it's so preeeetty!

Her and a couple of other similar artist influence my own watercolour typography that's featured here occasionally. I've been wanting to get more into it and hopefully start up a collection of greeting cards that I've been brainstorming recently. She sells some of her work as prints, pillowcases and tote bags. She's worked with some major companies such as Maybelline and creates marvellous work for each and every one of them. I do have a soft spot for some of her foil designs but the simple black ink designs are truely the best. Can't wait til I'm no longer a student and earning enough to spend money on things that aren't food and buy some of her prints but until then I shall create my own and cry that they aren't as good!

Artist Attraction #6 | Andrea Lauren

Bringing back my old series Artist Attraction; where I introduce you to new artists that I've recently come across, starting with Andrea Lauren. 

I came across Andrea via Pinterest and instantly fell in love with her work. After studying letterpress at university last year I have a new found love for all things print. This British lady specialises in linocuts, silkscreens, and block prints like those above, the latter being my favourite. I slightly wish that I came across her before I finished my assignment as I'd have loved to include some of her influences in my work. The thing I love about this kind of art is how simple it is but how much thought and consideration goes into it. The problem with simple is it has to be perfect and Andrea just pulls it off!

I totally recommend looking through her site though some of her designs have even made it to clothing and she has instructions on how to do prints like hers. It makes me want to do more printing but I have no idea where the new print room is now the unis been rearranged. Unfortunately... 

Artist Attraction #5 | Emma Leonard

Another Melborne based artist, I'm somehow staying close to home with most of these artists I like which is really weird as all the 'native' type artists they used to bring out in art classes were horrible and I hated them but I guess there are many decent ones out there. Emma Leonard mixes both traditional painting and watercolour with digital enhanced imagery producing very clean and interestingly detailed women. If I could even draw people half as well as she does let alone paint then I would be one happy camper.

Artist Attraction #4 | Brittany Statt

I came across this artist on Tumblr and ended up browsing her entire portfolio here. She's a Graphic Designer from Rochester, NY and has a real knack for type. The piece above is a part of her hand lettering projects and this is the sort of thing I really hope I'll be able to achieve in the near future. A mix of art and type it's really gorgeous and the quotes are unique rather than the usual famous quotes seen all over the place. Check her out! 

Artist Attraction #3 | Dawn Tan

I came across this artist whilst browsing Pintrest a while ago and ended up spending quite a while browsing her various pieces. After coming across her again on Tumblr I thought I might include a little post about her work on the blog. Dawn Tan lives in Australia and specialises mainly in landscapes, food and plants, her art is laid back and fun to look at. I wish I had the confidence she has with watercolour. I think she's been one of my latest inspirations to my work especially as I discovered her shortly before purchasing my first watercolour palette set. I wonder if you could actually make what she's drawn just from seeing the ingredients, the pieces are really unique and I really wish I could have one for my room! Even just the soy bread and smoothie piece, which shows how easy her inspiration comes to her - just from breakfast. I think from looking at her architecture pieces that the year 10 art class at my school studied her, that's a bit freaky coming across the actual artist years later!    

Artist Attraction #2 | Lizzie Mackay

Another artist discovered on Pintrest: Lizzie Mackay... aren't her illustrations beautiful! There's just something about any nicely drawn animals that just make me want to look at every single other piece the artist has produced and these are no different. I had to google her and spend a good hour or so looking through all her pieces on her website here, I really recommend a look as I'll definitely be using some of her work as inspiration for my own x

Artist Attraction #1 | Emma Zanelli

I came across this gorgeous illustrator this morning on Pintrest, having stalked pretty much her entire Facebook of photos I came to the conclusion I really love Emma Zanelli of Kiss The Devil design and illustration. She's a freelance illustrator and graphic designer from the United Kingdom. There's just something about the mix of hand drawn pencil and Photoshop that gives me the happy 'yay fab illustration' feeling. She does commissions if you're interested over on her Facebook page so if you're interested in getting Zanelli-fied go check that out, also you should like her page too! I'm loving the contrast of the girly make up and hair with the tattoos, quite a common idea around some artists at the moment.
