#020 | Captivating Comics: All about our favourite comics and graphic novels

Saturday 22 June 2019
[Hand Lettered Cover Art - "Captivating Comics] Episode 20 of Rants and Reviews is now live. We're talking all about our favourite comics and graphic novels.

Welcome to episode 20! Today we're talking all about graphic novels and comics; the ones we've enjoyed, the ones on our TBR piles, and the ones coming out soon that we just can't wait to get our hands on.

CURRENTLY READING

Each episode of Rants and Reviews we share what we’re currently reading, so you can discover our favourite genes, add some books to your TBR pile, and hear us rave and rage about characters, plot, setting and more.
Anjali is currently reading Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly.
Sophie is currently reading 1984 by George Orwell and has just started Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi.

MAIN FEATURE

(08:50) There's a couple of graphic novels that we've both read so we're gonna kick off with them. One of the most recent reads was Steel Prince by V.E. Schwab, illustrated by Andrea Olimpieri. We both enjoyed it, but wanted a lot more out of it. The illustrations were quite harsh - very good! but sharp edges - which was a little bit jarring. We'll both still be checking out the next bind up, Night of Knives.

(13:10) One of our favourites of all time (not that we've read a lot) is Nimona, by Noelle Stevenson. Noelle both writes and illustrates this one, and it's super cute and the story is really great. Noelle also illustrated the cover for Fangirl, by Rainbow Rowell, and is one of the artists of The Lumberjanes.

(17:00) Sophie chats about The Lumberjanes, of which she's read the first eight issues, but they're up to issues 63, which is a lot!

(20:18) Last year Anjali got 10 bind-ups of a comic book from the library and managed to get through eight of them before having to return them. Tune in to find out which ones she's talking about!

(24:25) Sophie shares her next graphic novel, which is called Maus, by Art Spiegelman. It's a historic graphic novel with a twist!

(27:00) Anjali talks about the other graphic novel she's read, which was super cute but she had gripes with it.

(29:40) A ghost, a laundromat, the afterlife; all that and more in Sophie's next pick: Sheets, by Brenna Thummler. This sounds super cute and Anjali needs to read is ASAP.

(33:00) Sophie's final comment is about a book that she's not sure is in physical form, having received a review copy from the digital book platform, Netgalley. But it's Camouflage: The Hidden Lives of Autistic Women, by Sarah Bargiela.

(34:10) We give a few shout outs to some graphic novels that we are keen to read, and some that are coming out soon that we are excited about.
