When I woke up this morning and found out Alan Rickman had died I felt a small part of my childhood collapse. The Harry Potter world has always been a huge part of my life and although Severus Snape wasn't my favourite character as a child the more I aged the more I found Rickman's acting hilarious and amazing. The character I hated for always getting in the way of Harry, Ron, and Hermione's secret missions soon made me laugh with every line. Everyone's favourite "Turn to page 394", the whole scene when he and Harry first meet "Clearly, fame isn't everything, is it, Mr Potter", I've actually learnt exactly what all those questions mean thanks to the deleted scene. "You ought to be careful. People might think you're... up to something", that well known Rickman pause that we all know and love. Then how can we forget "After all this time / Always..." the quote that turned many Snape haters into his adoring fans while tears ran down their cheeks. Those adoring fans have now taken to every social media using the exact same quote to express their mourning, along with many gorgeous illustrations making their way around the internet.
It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I discovered the amazingness that is Love Actually, I know I know I've been missing out! But every December since I've loved watching Alan Rickman as Bad Harry. It was only this year that I found out he was actually Bad Harry cheating on Karen, the way Rickman portrayed the character gave you that hope, the hope that it was only a necklace - not a necklace and sex.
While in the past we have lost Richard Harris after the second movie, Rickman would be the first (correct me if I'm wrong) main character to die after the whole series has finished. Personally the only big celebrity death that has properly hit me has been Phillip Seymour Hoffman in 2014, adoring him in The Boat That Rocked, but now with Rickman that seems almost insignificant.
Now I feel like I need to watch all the Harry Potter movies back to back. What are your favourite Snape quotes, or do you love him more in another movie? Let me know!
